I’ve had people send me voice messages when it’s easier to talk rather than type out their thoughts, but it’s always felt weird to me when I try to do it. But I’m willing to give it another shot—it IS nice to hear their voices.
This is a subject I’ve been struggling with lately. I don’t have a strategy besides trying to reach out when I think of them. One friend we send Instagram Reels back and forth, another we have numerous hours of WhatsApp voice messages, others ebb and flow, but I’ve been wishing for a better way. I love the idea of one text per weekday, I may try that out!
I body-double with long-distance friends several times a week, and I just instituted monthly standing dates with my shorter-distance (within an hour's drive) friends. We have a plan like a long walk on the fourth Friday of every month, so we don't have to do all the back-and-forthing that makes me feel insane. I've also just created a weekly in-person body doubling event at a coffee shop in my new city, as I am hoping to make some new local friends.
Please steal that idea! I've already made two new connections with potential friends, one of whom invited me for a hike and gave me a great suggestions on something related to my business. :D
My friend and I promised, when she moved 10 hours away for grad school, to be in touch when we could or wanted to, but there would never be any expectation or pressure. We’re 30 years in, and have been irregular but profound friends ever since. We see each other every year or two, occasionally Zoom/phone/email. We’ve been there for weddings, illness, heartbreaks, and more.

Avoiding the back-and-forth of scheduling is gold! Also, I love the in-person body doubling event idea--I may steal that (you get all credit!)

I wish I could "Like" this 10x!

"Irregular but profound friends"--I love this so much. When there's no expectation or pressure, miracles happen!
